“At present, Monsoon is in active phase. For northeastern states, we expect extremely heavy rainfall for the next 2 days, especially in Arunachal Prades,” Kumar said.
Kumar further said, “We have issued red alerts for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim for today and for 2 days for Arunachal Pradesh.”
Apart from heavy rainfall in the northeast region, the IMD has observed light to moderate rainfall in other parts of the country, including central and northwest India, with some areas experiencing heavy rainfall.
“If we talk about the other parts of the country, especially the central part of northwest India everywhere, we are also expecting and experiencing light to moderate rains and somewhere heavy rains as well,” Kumar said.
Looking ahead, Kumar indicated that conditions are expected to be favorable for further promotion of monsoon.
“We have progressed to monsoon in most parts of West Rajasthan, Haryana, entire Uttar Pradesh and rest of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu Kashmir. In the coming days, conditions will be favorable for further progress. We may expect monsoon in rest part of the country in the next 2-3 days…,” the IMD scientist said.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has predicted storms with light to moderate rain and gusty winds in and adjacent areas of the National Capital Region Sunday afternoon.
“30/06/2024: 11:50 IST; Thunderstorm with light to moderate rain and gusty winds of 30-40 Km/h will occur over and adjoining areas of NCR ( Dadri, Greater Noida). Light rain/ will light rain expected over and adjoining areas of NCR (Balabhgarh) Bawal (Haryana) during next 2 hours,” X posted.
Earlier this week, the national capital recorded its highest rainfall in 88 years.
According to the Indian Meteorological Service, Delhi recorded 228mm of rain as of 8:30am. on Thursday, June 27 until 8:30 a.m. of Friday, June 28. This is the heaviest 24-hour June rainfall the national capital has seen since 1936, when 235.5 mm was recorded.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) scientist Soma Sen said on Saturday that heavy rainfall is expected in Delhi in the next two days.
“Rain is expected to increase in the coming days over North India. Monsoon has advanced further over Eastern UP and in the next 2-3 days Western UP and Haryana will also be covered. Orange alert has been issued for UP, Chhattisgarh Heavy rain will Heavy rains have been reported across central India. We have forecast heavy rains in Delhi for the next two days,” Sen said.
The IMD has issued a warning for widespread rains and storms in several regions in India on Sunday.
Recent satellite images indicate the presence of convective clouds, signaling the possibility of light to moderate rainfall in many locations.
Heavy rain, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, cloud lightning and gusty winds are expected over Punjab and adjoining Himachal Pradesh, southwest and adjoining extreme northwest Madhya Pradesh, eastern Uttar Pradesh and adjoining extreme north Chhattisgarh, southeast Madhyade, Bihar, Jharkhand, south Gujarat, southern Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, southern Karnataka, northern Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam and Meghalaya, according to the IMD.
Apart from these areas, light to moderate rainfall is expected at a few places with isolated thundershowers, cloud lightning and gusty winds likely to affect Odisha, Konkan, Goa, south Madhya Maharashtra, Kerala, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram , Tripura, Lakshadweep and Nicobar Islands.
