The General LLM
Most LLM students choose the General Program because it gives them the most flexibility to take the courses they want in pursuit of their professional interests and personal ambitions. Whether you're a US-educated or international lawyer looking for personalized professional development or a candidate for the US bar exam, Northeastern's General LLM Program offers what you need to do what you want: advance your professional goals and make the difference in the world.
The Experiential LLM (with co-op placement) lasts 12 months. The LLM (without co-op) lasts 9 months. Students start in the fall. Students should apply by April 1 for priority consideration.
The General LLM Program features:
Minimum Required Courses: LLM students who earned their first law degree outside the US benefit from three core courses in legal research, legal writing, and an introduction to the US legal system, which provide the essential knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the US law school environment and the global practice of law.
A maximum number of electives: LLM students in the General Program enroll in regular JD courses based solely on their personal interests and career goals, including the desire to qualify for the US bar examination. You can also focus your studies on a specific substantive area, such as corporate law, commercial law, commercial law, public international law, intellectual property or international human rights.
Coop: All Experiential LLM students in good academic standing spend a full term completing a full-time legal experience in settings such as law firms, corporations, clinics, courthouses, government agencies, community organizations, NGOs and advocacy groups around the world.
Students start in the fall and should apply by April 1 for priority consideration.
Gatherings
Each of the concentrations combines a core of required courses with a wide range of electives and practical legal experience. The curriculum provides students with a strong substantive foundation in the area of ​​specialization while giving them substantial freedom to choose their own courses and pursue their own career interests. Students can also gain practical legal experience through the Co-op and complete an independent research and writing project.
Health Policy and Law
The Health Policy and Law concentration is designed to meet the needs of attorneys working in the field of health policy and law who hope to improve their skills, or attorneys wishing to enter this rapidly growing field. With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, public health challenges, global public health issues, and bioethical questions, this is a growing field with tremendous opportunities for those with an LLM degree.
Human Rights and Economic Development
The Human Rights and Economic Development concentration is designed for both US-educated and internationally trained attorneys preparing for careers working with NGOs, advocacy groups, community organizations, and others dedicated to supporting human rights through the legal systemic. Students are invited to participate in the Law School's collaborative efforts with scholars, institutions, and advocates nationally and internationally to address human rights issues and promote economic, social, and cultural rights.
International Business Law
Students in the International Business Law concentration have the opportunity to focus on how law and business interact in a global context. The concentration is designed for lawyers who aim to practice in the complex and ever-evolving world of business across national borders.
Intellectual Property and Innovation
Students in the Intellectual Property and Innovation concentration will acquire the intellectual property skills and knowledge needed to work effectively with innovators and entrepreneurs and to serve as legal advisors in the commercial world.
Online LLM
The Online LLM program offers a flexible, online learning format designed for internationally trained as well as US trained lawyers to enhance practical skills and foundational knowledge of the ever-changing US legal environment and the global practice of law.
