America brings back 11 citizens from northeastern Syria.
On Tuesday, Blinken said they were working on a “difficult process of bringing people back and rebuilding their lives” in close cooperation with other government agencies.
He said that during this operation, the US assisted in the return of six Canadian, four Dutch and one Finnish nationals, including eight children.
So far, 30,000 people from 60 different countries live in the al-Hol and Roj camps in northeastern Syria. The majority of these people are young.
Blinken further added, “The answer to the humanitarian and security issues in Syria's refugee camps and detention facilities is for countries to resettle, renovate, reintegrate and, where appropriate, hold accountable for misconduct.” The U.S. is committed to helping those countries that intend to take their citizens back from northeastern Syria and to find options, including resettlement, for people who cannot return to their communities or homelands.
