Fly Creek, NY – Bassett Healthcare Network's North East Center for Occupational Health & Safety (NEC) recently helped orchestrate it sixth International Conference on Safety and Health of the Fishing Industry (IFISH 6) in Rome, Italy, bringing together industry and government representatives, researchers and advocates to discuss the sustainability and well-being of fishermen, seafood processors and aquaculture workers around the world. Among the organizations that attended were World Health Organization (WHO)The International Maritime Organization (IMO)and US Coast Guard.
IFISH is advised and organized by Bassett's North East Center for Occupational Health & Safety (NEC)The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
NEC, which is a research center that is part of the Bassett Research Institute and the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health (NYCAMH)conducts research and provides solutions to farmers, foresters, and fishermen throughout the northeastern United States.
“The importance of the health and safety of fishermen, seafood processors and aquaculture workers – and their role in feeding the world – cannot be overstated,” said Dr. Julie Sorensen, Director of NEC and NYCAMH;
In addition to the main organizer of the conference, Dr. Sorensen presented a workshop titled “IFISH Innovation Exchange”, to provide support for the continued exchange of ideas and solutions beyond the conference.
“It was really great to see the enthusiasm from the conference participants and we hope to keep the momentum going between the IFISH meetings through the Innovation Exchange,” said Dr. Sorensen.
The conference was held on Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) headquartered in Rome, with presenters and participants from 31 countries represented, consisting of 166 people serving coastal communities from both developed and developing countries.
IFISH is the only international conference dedicated to fisheries, aquaculture and seafood processing, health and safety. Since 2000, IFISH has offered researchers, safety and health professionals, educators, workers and industry experts, ergonomists, government and regulatory representatives and other professionals the opportunity to attend keynote lectures, workshops and presentations presenting new health research findings and safety at work and innovations. Sessions included keynotes from International Maritime Organization (IMO)The International Labor Organization (ILO)The World Health Organization (WHO), (NIOSH)and US Coast Guard.
