Feb. 4 (UPI) — Extreme cold temperatures blanketed parts of the northeastern United States on Saturday, plunging well below freezing in many places and setting record lows in the process, the National Weather Service said.
The mercury plunged to minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit in Boston as frozen New England.

“To add context to this morning's record cold, the -10F low in Boston is the first double-digit negative temperature since -12F in 1957!” the NWS office in Boston he said in a tweet. “The -10F also breaks the most recent coldest temperature of -9F set in 2016.”
New Hampshire's Mount Washington fell to an all-time low and, combined with the wind, recorded the coldest temperature ever recorded in the United States at minus 108 degrees.
The 6,288-foot peak has the highest elevation in the northeastern US.

Portland, Maine also recorded its coldest temperature on record as the mercury dropped to minus 45 degrees with the wind chill.
Further north, more than 13,000 customers were still without power in Nova Scotia, Canada, Saturday afternoon after being hit by wintry weather that brought down trees and power lines.
Environment Canada has warned of temperatures I would feel like 45.5 degrees with a wind chill.
After rising during the day, temperatures in New England are expected to drop back down, reaching minus 15 degrees in some parts.
The peak of the cold, however, had passed by noon on Saturday.
“Temperatures will gradually warm to above normal by tomorrow afternoon across the region,” the NWS said. “Nonetheless, a few more hours of dangerously windy childish temperatures.”
