Several schools in Ghana continue to benefit from the kindness of some students and staff of Northeastern University, Boston, in the United States of America.
The latest to benefit from educational and sports materials from the team is the Church of Christ M/A Primary School in Cape Coast in the Central Region.
The School, with a student population of 132, can now conduct their practical work in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as well as many reading materials.
Professor Vanessa Johnson, Associate Professor and Director of College Student Development and Counseling, Department of Applied Psychology, Northeastern University, led a 23-member team to donate seven computers, three laptops and a projector to Christ Church Elementary School.
In an effort to promote reading among children, the group donated over 2,000 books to a number of schools in the hinterland, including Christ Church School in Cape Coast.
Professor Johnson said her team worked with a school in Manhattan, New York to take about 1200 donated books to add to stocks received from other donors, with a view to onward delivery to schools in Ghana.
“I go to places, back in the US and buy books to add to what we receive from our well-meaning donors. We donate books every year to various schools in Ghana, including the school for the deaf,” he said.
Ms Helen Dontwi, Principal of the School, said that before the donation, the students were using a problematic RLG laptop which was given to the school about six years ago.
He said, “The support will help children know how to type, how to browse, go online and search for information and help expand their knowledge.”
The head teacher said that in appreciation of the gesture, the school named the computer lab after Professor Johnson, pointing out: “He contributed a lot to the creation of the lab because even though we had the room, it was empty.”
The team also donated sports equipment to the School for the Deaf.
The Group is on a month-long visit, organized by Brisk Tour Consult Limited, a travel and tourism event agency in Accra, to explore Ghana's cultural heritage and support schools suffering from the hinterland.
